Whitewater of the Nation’s Capital: The Great Falls Race (Entry #37 Short Film of the Year Awards 2020)

14 miles upriver of Washington, D.C., the Potomac River cascades over Great Falls, a set of spectacular Class V+ rapids that drop 76 feet in less than a mile. The Great Falls Race was one of the original extreme whitewater competitions, and nearly 30 years later it is still one of the most challenging. It may be the only extreme race where the course changes year-to-year depending on the water level! This year, many of the best paddlers on the East Coast showed up and put on a show, while Geoff Calhoun, longtime Great Falls native, took the win.
