Nile River Festival 2014 – Big Air and Endurance Race
January 23rd to 26th saw the 9th edition of the infamous Nile River Festival take place, and once again it drew in kayakers from around the globe. Located near Jinja, Uganda, this section of the Nile provides some 40kms of world class white water and playboating. The NRF has gain legendary status due to its challenging rapids and just as challenging partying – this year was no exception.
Around 30 competitors eagerly lined themselves up ready to drop off the newly constructed kayak ramp as the sun set over the Bujagali Lake on day one. As expected there were some entertaining crashes and carnage but the top prize went to Colin Wong. In true NRF style, after official proceedings had ended, Anton Immler took to the ramp, lighting it on fire before throwing himself and his kayak through it.
Some sore heads awoke the next day for the 30km mass start endurance race. The top 4 pairs, all local guys that have grown up and work on the river, finished within 3minutes of the fastest time of 3hours and 11minutes! The winning time was that of Jackson Two and Musa Mutamba. Another note-worthy performance was that of our youngest competitor, 10 year old, Craig Dahl who completed the race alongside his dad, Jon!
