Fight for rivers in the Balkan Peninsula
This spring guys from Leeway collective became proud ambassadors of the campaign Save the Blue Heart of Europe – initiative that is fighting against insatiable appetite of some that would like to build more than 2000 new dams in the Balkan Peninsula. Balkan is the only remaining region of Europe where many pristine and wild rivers, true kayaking gems can be found! As kayakers are the ones that don’t just give up but fight even when the going gets tough Leeway collective is now trying to bring this issue closer to our community and go into the fight together as joining forces of like-minded is the way to success!
The fist in the row of activities was an event that gathered a broad variety of people from locals to tourists from abroad that held place in Bled, Slovenia last Friday. Leeway collective, with the support of campaign Save the Blue Heart of Europe and Patagonia organized a kayak themed documentary film premiere about the last free flowing River in Europe; One for the River – The Vjosa Story followed by presentation of the campaign and Wild party for Wild Rivers.
The fight to save last free flowing river in Europe against 33 hydropower projects is doing great but will demand your help. Idea of protecting river Aoos/Vjosa from her source to sea with national park is more alive than ever and correspondence with Albanian Prime-Minister is now established. Stay tuned for more info on how to get involved and follow Leeway collective‘s and campaign’s social media.
