Kayak Session #74 – Summer 2020
OUT MAY 15th
RESURGENCE – A ZAMBEZI REVIVAL
For decades, the rapids of the Zambezi River’s Batoka Gorge have shaped the evolution of whitewater kayaking. Though many are initially intimidated by the size, power, and legend of the rapids, Bren Orton reminds us why the Zambezi is a river for the people and how the rising popularity of freeride is bringing it back into the spotlight.
VALSESIA – « LA VALLE PIÙ VERDE D’ITALIA »
Driving up the steep mountain roads towards Monte Rosa, Europe’s second-highest mountain, you’ll get your first glimpses of the Sesia River, and your first inkling of why instead of the “greenest valley in Italy,” Valsesia should be the called the “valley of rivers.”
NOEICK EXPEDITION – THE PLEASURE OF PURGATORY
Reaching the take-out of a successful first descent you have been planning for over a year should be cause for celebration. But, as Chris Korbulic, Ben Stookesberry, Sandy Macewan, and Jules Domine discover on the Noeick, sometimes the journey isn’t as important as the desire that drives it.
PROFILE – THE MADAWASKA KANU CENTRE
When Hermann and Christa Kerckhoff decided to build a kayak school on the banks of the Madawaska River and model it after the European ski schools of their youth, they had no idea the legacy they would leave behind. Three generations later, the Kerckhoffs and MKC are still spreading the joy of whitewater.
