Whitewater in the Desert – Dubai

While many people’s impression of the UAE extends no further than stories of shiny clubs and tall buildings in Dubai the Emirates is investing a significant amount in sporting infrastructure. This has recently meant the opening of the first Whitewater Stadium and Surf Pool in the Gulf.

Wadi Adventure began operations early last year and has seen an early adoption of the facility from the European Slalom Community spearheaded by Martikan and the Slovakian Team. With consistent winter temperatures, close proximity to Europe and a stable government and social structure it offers athletes a viable alternative to Penrith in Sydney for the off-season.

The whitewater is split between three channels, beginner and intermediate channels and a 488m long expert channel providing some very challenging fast flowing technical water for boaters. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea travelling to the desert to go kayaking on an artificial course. However, for those looking for a stopover on their way to Uganda or an escape from the bitter cold of Europe’s winter training, it is a very good option, and you can even learn to surf while you are there.
